AZMOM: 2016 Digital Transformation
Phoenix Dental I.T., L.L.C.
This year Phoenix Dental I.T. was commissioned by Central Arizona Dental Society Foundation to develop and provide an integrated digital system for patient enrollment, record keeping and x-ray capture for their annual charity dental event for the underprivileged.
The event is known as Arizona Dental Mission of Mercy or “AZMOM”, https://azmom.org/ and is held every December. This year’s event had more than 100 dental stations and was working on a very small budget. The sponsors also had limited time for setup at the venue which included several acres of operation.
Phoenix Dental I.T.’s solution provided a secure Intranet based application written for patient enrollment, record keeping and x-ray that was accessed over a light weight Wi-Fi network. The solution also allowed the dentists, hygienists and volunteers to use their own laptops and tablets on the Internet while using the new Intranet. This allowed them to access the data being created for the more than 2000 underserved patients using a browser over https for secure communications on their own devices as well as those provided at the event.
Volunteers in the check-in area were provided low cost “dumb terminals” that were purchased from surplus wholesalers and re-imaged with Linux thin-client software. Firefox was the default browser that automatically accessed the event’s custom webpage on the Intranet. There was easy access for patient data entry and review in the newly designed application.
X-rays were acquired from 4 different brands of panoramic and inter-oral digital dental x-ray machines and then imported into patient’s record on the Intranet as jpegs. This allowed access across the venue by doctors to view and analyze for treatment plans.
After the patient was entered all other volunteers, dentists and hygienists were able to conveniently access this patient’s chart throughout the venue. The patient could then be efficiently routed through the stations and receive the necessary x-rays and treatment. The routing and treatment areas used all-in-one workstations with Linux and built in Wi-Fi provided by 12 different access points throughout the 4 acre operation area.
The success of Phoenix Dental I.T.’s solution at this year’s event has ensured the success of this annual 2-day event for years to come. It will be leveraged in other states for their dental Mission of Mercy programs.
